204. First Ladies Water Garden

The First Ladies Water Garden pays tribute to the First Ladies of the United States.

In recent decades, each First Lady championed a public cause, providing a model for improving

our nation and the world.

Jacqueline Kennedy, for example, celebrated the arts and promoted historic preservation. Lady Bird Johnson worked for environmental protection and to beautify America’s highways by planting wildflowers.

More recently, first ladies have promoted volunteerism, advocated for women’s rights and fought against drug and alcohol abuse. They have also worked to improve literacy and the education system, and promoted healthy living.

As you reflect on their contributions, enjoy a moment of calm next to the fountain. Notice the intricate pattern of the stonework, constructed with five shades of American granite and bluestone.
